Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Maybe. Normal cooking is unaffected. Only self-clean is impaired. Avoid self-clean until the latch is serviced.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Cleaning the latch strike plate and power cycling often resolves F5 when grease was the obstruction.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Do not force the door open — the latch mechanism can be damaged, requiring a more expensive repair, Do not run another self-clean cycle until the fault is resolved.
Symptoms You May Notice
Door will not lock for self-clean
Pressing self-clean causes the lock motor to buzz or click but the latch does not engage. The cycle will not start and F5 appears on the display.
Door locks but will not unlock after cleaning
After a self-clean cycle completes and the oven cools below 550 degrees F, the door remains locked. The control shows F5 and the latch motor does not retract.
Lock motor runs continuously
The door lock motor makes a persistent humming or grinding noise as it tries to extend or retract the latch, running well beyond the normal 15-second engagement period.
Self-clean aborts partway through the cycle
The oven begins the self-clean cycle but shuts off after 30 to 60 minutes with F5. The door may remain locked until the cavity cools.
Possible Causes
Worn door lock motor assembly
The small DC motor that drives the latch mechanism has worn brushes or a seized gearbox, preventing the latch from fully extending or retracting.
Requires ProfessionalMisaligned door latch switch
The microswitch that signals the board whether the door is locked or unlocked is out of alignment, so the board never receives confirmation that the latch engaged.
Requires ProfessionalWarped oven door from heat cycling
Repeated self-clean cycles have slightly warped the door or frame on Heritage ranges, preventing the latch hook from reaching the striker plate.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Attempt a manual door release
If the door is stuck locked after a completed clean cycle, turn off the breaker for 5 minutes, then restore power. The board may automatically retract the latch during its power-up sequence.
On Dacor Professional models, the lock motor resets itself during a power cycle about 70 percent of the time.

Check for door alignment issues
With the door unlocked and open, look at the latch hook on the door and the striker plate on the frame. They should align within 2mm. Push the door firmly closed and check for any gaps.
If the door sits unevenly or has a visible gap at the top or bottom, the inner hinges may need adjustment.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Lock motor runs but door does not move — mechanical jam or broken gear in the lock assembly
- Door lock switch tests as failed (open circuit) — switch replacement needed
- Power cycle does not clear the lock and bake is also blocked — control board relay suspected
