Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Maybe. The machine needs water to operate. Filling the reservoir clears the alert.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Filling the water tank and pressing start immediately clears FILL.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: FILL persists after refilling and reseating the tank multiple times, Pump continues to run dry and makes loud rattling sounds.
Symptoms You May Notice
Machine refuses to start a brew cycle
Pressing any coffee selection button on the CM24 results in no action or a prompt to add water, even though you believe the tank should have water.
FILL message appears on the display
The CM24 shows FILL as a persistent message, indicating the water level sensor at the base of the tank receptacle cannot detect a sufficient water supply.
Machine starts brewing then stops after a few seconds
The pump activates briefly, the machine begins dispensing, then halts with FILL because the water level dropped below the sensor threshold mid-cycle.
Pump makes loud chattering noise
The vibration pump runs but produces a rapid chattering or hammering sound instead of a smooth hum, indicating it is drawing air instead of water from the tank.
Possible Causes
Water tank is empty or insufficiently filled
The simplest cause — the tank does not have enough water to trigger the level sensor. The CM24 requires at least 200ml above the minimum line to register.
DIY PossibleTank not seated properly in the machine
The water tank is not fully inserted or the valve at the tank base is not engaging with the machine receptacle, so water cannot flow to the pump even though the tank is full.
DIY PossibleDirty or faulty water level sensor
The float or reed switch sensor in the tank receptacle is stuck in the empty position due to mineral deposits, a stuck float, or a failed magnetic reed switch.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Remove, rinse, and refill the water tank
Pull the water tank out completely. Empty any remaining water, rinse the tank and its base valve, fill with fresh cold water above the maximum line, and reinsert firmly until it clicks.
Feel for the click when reinserting. On the CM24, the tank must seat fully to depress the internal valve — a partial insertion blocks water flow entirely.
-
2
Clean the tank receptacle and float
With the tank removed, look into the machine receptacle where the tank sits. Wipe out any debris or mineral deposits. If visible, gently move the float arm up and down to check it moves freely.
A stuck float is the most common non-obvious cause of persistent FILL messages on the CM24. Mineral crust around the float pivot prevents it from rising with the water level.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Water level sensor or float assembly is stuck and requires replacement
- Internal water inlet valve is not drawing water from a full tank
- Sensor wiring harness shows damage preventing accurate readings
