Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Steam system faults can cause pressure buildup or scalding. Do not use steam functions until repaired.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Descaling the steam wand and power cycling may resolve STEAM-ERR if caused by mineral blockage.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Any water leakage is visible around the machine base or back panel, STEAM-ERR persists after descaling and wand cleaning.

Symptoms You May Notice

Steam wand produces no steam or only drips water

Turning the steam knob or pressing the steam button on the CM24 results in water dripping from the wand instead of pressurized steam, making milk frothing impossible.

Machine takes more than 2 minutes to produce steam

The steam boiler heats for an unusually long time — well beyond the normal 30 to 45 second warmup — before producing weak, intermittent steam.

STEAM-ERR appears when steam is activated

Pressing the steam function triggers STEAM-ERR on the display. The machine may have attempted to heat the steam boiler but detected a pressure, temperature, or flow anomaly.

Machine leaks water from the steam wand area

Water seeps or drips from around the steam wand base or valve even when steam is not being used, indicating a seal failure in the steam system.

Possible Causes

1

Scale-blocked steam boiler or thermoblock

Mineral deposits have partially or fully blocked the secondary steam boiler, preventing water from being heated to steam temperature. The CM24 uses a dedicated thermoblock for steam.

2

Failed steam boiler thermostat or sensor

The temperature sensor or safety thermostat on the steam boiler has failed, so the heating element does not activate or shuts off prematurely before reaching steam temperature.

Requires Professional
3

Worn steam valve seal

The O-ring or gasket inside the steam valve has degraded from heat cycling, causing a leak that drops system pressure below the threshold needed for steam generation.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Run a descaling cycle

Mineral scale in the steam circuit is the most common cause. Run the CM24 full descaling program with recommended descaling solution, which flushes both the brew and steam boiler circuits.

If you have never descaled the machine or it has been more than 3 months, a single descaling cycle may not be enough. Run it twice back to back for heavy buildup.

  2. 2

Clean the steam wand and tip

Unscrew the steam wand tip (frother nozzle) and soak it in warm water with a drop of dish soap for 15 minutes. Use a thin pin or the included cleaning tool to clear the steam holes.

Dried milk residue inside the wand tip can mimic a steam system fault by blocking the outlet completely.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Steam boiler thermostat or heating element requires testing with a multimeter
  • Internal steam valve or solenoid is stuck and cannot be cleared by descaling
  • Any water leak inside the unit requires immediate professional inspection
