Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
Maybe. The coffee machine still functions but scale buildup reduces performance and can damage the boiler.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Running the descaling cycle clears CALC. The machine prompts again after the next usage threshold.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Machine refuses to start any brew cycle and only shows CALC, Water flow from group head is very restricted or stops mid-brew.
Symptoms You May Notice
Coffee brews noticeably slower than usual
A single espresso shot that normally takes 25 seconds now takes 40 to 60 seconds because mineral scale in the boiler and flow path restricts water flow.
Brewing temperature is inconsistent
The first cup is lukewarm while subsequent cups are too hot, because scale buildup on the boiler heating element creates uneven heat transfer.
CALC message appears on the CM24 display
The built-in CM24 coffee machine displays CALC as a maintenance alert indicating the descaling interval has been reached based on brew count or water hardness setting.
Steam wand produces weak or sputtering steam
The steam wand delivers reduced steam pressure or sputters because scale deposits have partially blocked the steam boiler outlet or wand internal passages.
Possible Causes
Mineral scale buildup in the boiler and flow path
Calcium and magnesium deposits from hard water have accumulated on the boiler heating element, internal tubing, and flow meters over time. The CM24 tracks this based on brew count.
DIY PossibleExpired or bypassed water filter
The built-in water filter cartridge is exhausted or was removed without replacement, allowing unfiltered hard water to accelerate scale accumulation.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Run the built-in descaling program
Follow the CM24 descaling procedure: fill the water tank with descaling solution (Dacor-recommended or citric acid solution), select the descaling program from the maintenance menu, and let it run the full automated cycle.
The descaling cycle takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and uses the full water tank. Do not interrupt the cycle once started.
-
2
Replace the water filter cartridge
Remove the water tank and replace the filter cartridge at the bottom. Reset the filter counter through the CM24 settings menu after installing the new filter.
Dacor recommends replacing the CM24 water filter every 2 months or 50 liters, whichever comes first. Using filtered water dramatically reduces scale frequency.
-
3
Adjust the water hardness setting
In the CM24 settings menu, verify the water hardness level matches your local water supply. Test with a hardness strip if unsure. Adjust the setting so the machine calculates descaling intervals accurately.
If you have very hard water (above 15 grains per gallon), set the hardness to maximum so the machine prompts for descaling more frequently.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- CALC returns within days of completing a descaling cycle, indicating heavy scale buildup requiring manual cleaning
- Descaling solution does not flow through the system, suggesting a blocked flow meter or valve
- Technician service needed if boiler pressure sensor shows fault alongside CALC
