Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Maybe. Normal bake and broil still function. Only self-clean is impaired by the door lock fault.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Cleaning the strike plate and power cycling often resolves F5 when grease caused the obstruction.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Stop if the door is stuck locked — do not force it open, as this can break the latch arm and escalate repair cost., Do not run another self-clean cycle until the latch and position switch have been inspected..

Symptoms You May Notice

Self-clean aborts at startup

The oven begins the self-clean sequence, the lock icon appears, but the cycle cancels within the first two minutes and F5 is displayed.

Door stays locked after cleaning

After a self-clean cycle the door will not release and the lock icon remains illuminated even as the oven cools.

Audible motor hum without movement

A buzzing or humming sound comes from the top of the oven where the latch motor lives, but the latch hook does not travel to the locked stop.

Normal bake and broil unaffected

All standard cooking modes operate correctly — only the self-clean function and the door lock mechanism are impaired.

Possible Causes

1

Worn door latch motor

The latch motor brushes are worn or the motor winding has failed, preventing the mechanism from generating enough torque to drive the latch hook fully into position.

2

Failed door latch position switch

The microswitch that confirms the latch is locked has failed open and never signals the control board, even when the latch is physically in the correct position.

3

Warped door or obstructed strike plate

Grease buildup or door warping prevents the latch hook from reaching the strike plate, so the motor times out before completing travel.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean the door strike plate

With the oven fully cool and the breaker off, wipe the latch strike plate at the top of the oven frame with a degreaser cloth. Grease accumulation is a frequent cause of blocked latch travel on Dacor Heritage (HWO) and Modernist (DOB/DOP) wall ovens.

Use a toothbrush to clear grease from inside the strike slot.

  2. 2

    Power cycle and retry self-clean

Turn off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes, then restore power. Attempt to start self-clean once more. If F5 does not appear and the latch engages fully, a transient motor fault was the cause.

Listen closely — if the motor hums for the full timeout without moving the latch, the motor itself is failing.

  3. 3

    Inspect latch hook for damage

With the breaker off, look through the door gap at the top of the oven to see whether the latch hook is bent, broken, or physically obstructed. A bent hook cannot reach the locked position regardless of motor condition.

Use a flashlight. Do not insert fingers into the latch slot with power connected.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Latch motor runs continuously but the hook does not move — motor replacement required inside the top oven panel.
  • Door remains locked at room temperature after multiple power cycles — latch position switch has failed and needs replacement.
  • Door shows visible warping along the top edge — hinge adjustment or door replacement is needed before self-clean can be used safely.
